The Series:
Inspired by Sinners, this collection explores the places our sins can take us. Each painting is an interpretive piece from still shots of the movie trailers. An ode to the power and poise of unity in black and brown culture, Vi strives to transmute generational trauma through healing expression in art.
Volume Two:
This painting is the first volume of my series (Bourne Sinners) that explores the blues of being brown in America. Reminiscent of the works of Eric Barnes (Sugar Shack artist), this series is meant to engage the cultural memory bank of the Old South as told BY us FOR us. This scene was so powerful and truly moved me to tears the first time I watched it. The richness of the scenes, the power of the composition and the beauty of the vocals all stirred up the ancestors in me.
The Elements:
Motion : I wanted to capture motion somehow in the painting and went with this free formed brushstroke throughout. Feathering the strokes helped create the look you see in the painting.
The Moon: I played around with the idea of having them howl at the moon but settled simply for it towering over the right side of the frame. The moon’s presence was essential to this scene because it signified the wake of the night and was the centerpiece of this scene.
Fire: while the performance was happening, Fire is used to purify the air. As a physical manifestation of the energy in the room, Fire overtakes the lense and transforms into something central to the ritual happening. The reckoning and healing was being witnessed. While the prints offer a warm feel for the scene, the original includes this unique element to create a layered experience that jumps off the canvas.
The Stomp: the gesture was very nostalgic to black blues culture and the use of drums, wood, and voices to create a steady heartbeat for song. I wanted to capture this motion and chose the frame off the strength of that alone.
