The Series:
Inspired by Ryan Coogler’s Sinners film, this collection explores the places our sins can take us. Each painting is an interpretive piece from still shots of the movie trailers. An ode to the blues of black culture, Vi strives to transmute generational trauma through healing expression in art.
The Elements:
Moon - Smoke’s demeanor was the calm before the storm so I immediately knew he would be represented in nature by the moon. However the use of the moon in this painting also alludes to the source which guided him and protected him throughout the film, the universe and call of power from Annie’s hoodoo.
Blue - In Yoruba culture, blue symbolizes tranquility, healing, the ocean, and spirituality, deeply tied to the goddess Yemoja, representing motherhood and nurturing, while also signifying love and protection. My favorite color is blue. Blue for the working class he hustled his way out of.
Title and Composition - Smoke is deeply connected to the divine and the spiritual world which ultimately saves his life in the movie.
