“The People’s Feast” 🍽️ - 11 x 14” Acrylic and Oil on Mounted Canvas - Released on 06.19.2025, Sold at The Mazeum presented by The Black Art Museum at the Creative Saints Loft, MD.

The Series:

Inspired by @sinnersthemovie 🎥 , this collection explores the places our sins can take us. Each painting is an interpretive piece from still shots of the movie trailers. An ode to the blues of black culture, @an.artist.first challenges the bourne (limit) of her experiences growing up in an African American household adorned with art. Consciously growing with the Collective, Vi strives to transmute the blues of the world through thoughtful expression in art.

The Inspiration behind Volume VI:

This piece is titled “The People’s Feast” 🍽️ Capturing the essence of @michaelbjordan alter ego “Stack”, the Yoruba twin deity is revered as a divine entity representing balance, happiness, and spiritual strength. Stack’s role seemed to provide the lively balance to Smoke’s buttoned up demeanor. I thought it very necessary to use an image of him smiling layered on a background of chaos.

Ryan Coogler’s incorporation of #Yoruba mythology in a period drama makes this horror film the first of its kind in many regards. Black Americans have mixed responses to the film, which I believe is a testament to brilliance. As a black and brown creative if we’re not pushing the limits of our industry by telling our stories what’s the purpose of creating?

The final element to this study was my inclusion of the burning of #NottowayPlantation which once was one of the largest antebellum plantation houses in the U.S. This home served as the dwelling of John Hampden Randolph, master over 150 enslaved African Americans. The building combusted into flames on 05.15.2025. And with its layered history being deeply rooted in the oppression and exploitation of black Americans, it came as no surprise the Collective was unbothered. I found many parallels to the fires depicted in the film and the flames that burned this relic to the studs.

A reckoning is here. It sounds like revolution. It feels like reparations. And smells like southern cooking. 🍳
